Mr. Michael D. Elzey

Mr. Michael D. Elzey is in his third year as the Director of Bands at Cartersville Middle School where he conducts the Symphonic/Concerts Bands, Marching Band, "Category 5" Pep Band, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble.  Prior to his appointment, Mr. Elzey served as the Assistant Director of the CMS Bands and CHS Bands.

Mr. Elzey holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Education and a Masters Degree in Conducting and Music Education, both from Reinhardt University.  While at Reinhardt, Mr. Elzey served as Principal Saxophonist for the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet each year he attended.  Mr. Elzey also maintained a consistent schedule of working with numerous middle and high school band programs across north Georgia, including Cartersville High School.

In addition to his performance resume at Reinhardt, Mr. Elzey has also performed with several other ensembles including the Tara Winds Concert Band (Atlanta, GA), the Etowah Jazz Society (Cartersville, GA), the Northwest Georgia Winds (Rome, GA), and performed on numerous occasions with the United States Air Force "Band of the south" currently stationed in Knoxville, TN.

Bands under Mr. Elzey's direction have received consistent superior ratings at state and regional evaluations for concert band, marching band and jazz ensemble.  His students have enjoyed the privilege of performing across the southeast in cities such as Atlanta, Chattanooga, Blue Ridge, Nashville, Pigeon Forge and Orlando.  The CMS Band was selected to perform at the 2014 Reinhardt University Middle School Honor Band, which is a great honor for any band program.  Former students of Mr. Elzey have gone on to perform in several collegiate band programs across the southeast including the University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, Valdosta State University, Jacksonville State University, Kennesaw State University and the University of Tennessee.

Mr. Elzey's professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Georgia Assocation of Jazz Educators, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the Pi Kappa Lamda National Music Honor Society and the Alpha Chi National Honor Society.  Mr. Elzey and his lovely wife, Cindy, reside in Cartersville with their beautiful daughter, Morgan.  When not working with bands, Mr. Elzey spends his time researching and touring Civil War battlefields across the southeast and has contributed to numerous books and editorials related to the Civil War.
