CHS Teacher of the Year~ Debbie Justus

CHS 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year-Debbie Justus

Mrs. Debbie Justus is the Teacher of the Year for Cartersville High School.  Debbie has been an educator for 30 years.  Five of those teaching at CHS.  She received her Bachelor's and Master's in Early Childhood Education from UGA and Piedmont College, respectively.  She has her ESOL endorsement and received an Education Specialist degree from Piedmont College.  Debbie's first career choice was not education.  She originally thought she would like to be a pediatric nurse since her mother and grandmother were both in nursing, but when she failed the blood pressure test after she couldn't discriminate between the examiner's heartbeat and her own, she then decided to enter the field of education.  She believes in the vision of the Cartersville City School System and making it personal.  She is reminded daily of her grandmother Alma’s words "you can straighten a bush, but you can't straighten a tree."  Her humble interpretation of Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it" guides her each day.  Debbie views her role as an educator the same as her role as a parent; her students are as dear to her as her three children are.  Debbie says,” My failure in nursing led me on a rewarding and fulfilling journey as a teacher.”  Mrs. Tierce says, “her kindness and compassion extend beyond her role as a teacher who serves her students as a counselor, a parental figure, and a positive role model, which is why Mrs. Justus’ students love and respect her so much.”
