Welcome to our 8th grade ELA class! Thanks for taking the time to stop by my webpage. I am honored to teach 8th grade ELA this year with CMS! This will be my 12th year teaching, and second year teaching at Cartersville Middle. I previously taught ELA (grades 9-12) and video broadcasting with the Phoenix Performance Learning Center in Rome, GA (a non-traditional program of Rome High School) from 2011-2018. I then taught 9th Lit/Comp, Journalism (newspaper), and photography at Cherokee High School from 2018-2021 to be a little closer to our Cartersville home.
I have seen students do amazing things in my classes--from winning MANY county-level and state awards, to making amazing video projects seen collectively thousands of times worldwide, and even earning a national-level title. More importantly, I've watched each student grow, feel safe to express themselves, and take steps closer to dreams. I am relationship-focused, and I believe in celebrating mistakes with our triumphs, as it is a demonstration of effort to grow.
My husband and I moved to Cartersville in 2007. We felt at home from the moment we visited, and have never wanted to leave. It is an incredible opportunity to be able to invest in students who are a part of the community we call home.
A little about me: I'm a mom of two: Will, (10) and Addy (7). They and my husband of 16 years are my world. I love crafting/building projects, photography, world traveling, music (I was a music major first), collaborating with ed tech organizations, and I love producing videos with and for classes. Before pursuing a Master's in Education, I was a freelance writer with clients all over the world!
I received a BA in English with a professional writing concentration from Kennesaw State (2009), a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary English from Liberty University (2011), and an EdS in Instructional Technology and Media from the University of West GA (2022). I am a certified Microsoft Educator Expert, Apple Teacher, member of the Adobe Educator group, and Nearpod and Classcraft Certified Educator. I love working with technology and helping our students develop 21st century skills they can use in future careers!
We work hard, we collaborate, we set goals, we challenge ourselves outside of our comfort zone, and we support one another because success for the future is a mutual and universal ambition. If there is something that concerns you or you want to tell me about yourself (or your child), please let me know. My goals are for students to make the most of their time here, find the relevance and value in what they're learning, and grow in their abilities. My previous students still reach out to me regularly and I always want to be supportive. I work to make each year even better than the one before it.
So let's do it. Here's to a great year!
