In Beginning Spanish, students build a strong foundation in basic communication skills and cultural awareness. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Recognize and use the Spanish alphabet to pronounce words accurately
• Count, read, and write numbers from 1–100
• Greet others politely and say goodbye in everyday situations
• Tell time and understand basic schedules in Spanish
• Identify common classroom objects and follow simple classroom directions
• Talk about the weather and describe different seasons
• Name the months of the year and days of the week
• Say and write the date using appropriate Spanish conventions

Through interactive activities, speaking practice, and real-world connections, students develop confidence using Spanish in meaningful, age-appropriate ways while building skills that prepare them for continued language learning.

Intermediate Spanish builds on students’ foundational language skills and helps them communicate with more detail and confidence. Students continue developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through real-world topics and meaningful practice.

• By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Describe themselves and others using appropriate vocabulary
• Express likes and dislikes, especially when talking about classes and school life
• Use the verbs ser (to be) and tener (to have) correctly in the present tense
• Use subject pronouns to communicate clearly and accurately
• Identify and describe family members and relationships
• Name and describe rooms in a house and basic living spaces

Students engage in interactive activities, conversations, and simple writing tasks that encourage them to use Spanish in everyday situations while continuing to build confidence and accuracy.

Spanish 1 introduces students to using Spanish in practical, real-life situations while continuing to build strong communication skills. Students expand their ability to speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish through topics that connect to their everyday lives.

• By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Talk about school subjects and after-school activities
•  Use and conjugate -ar verbs in the present tense to describe daily routines and actions
• Discuss food and meals and order food politely in cafés and restaurants
• Describe popular sports such as baseball, basketball, tennis, and soccer, including player positions
• Use common stem-changing (root-changing) verbs to communicate more accurately
• Identify and describe mild illnesses and basic health-related needs

Instruction emphasizes interactive practice, conversation, and real-world applications to help students gain confidence and accuracy when communicating in Spanish. Spanish 1 prepares students for continued language study while encouraging cultural awareness and meaningful communication.

By the end of Spanish 2, students will be able to:

• Communicate more comfortably in Spanish through listening, speaking, reading, and writing
• Understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish on familiar topics
•  Express ideas, opinions, and information using a wider range of vocabulary and sentence structures
• View, read, and evaluate age-appropriate Spanish materials from both print and non-print sources
• Develop an appreciation for the cultures of Spanish-speaking communities while reflecting on their own culture
• Build cross-cultural awareness and respect for different perspectives
• Apply language skills in practical, real-life situations that support future academic, career, and global opportunities

By the end of Spanish 3, students will be able to:

• Communicate more effectively in Spanish through listening, speaking, reading, and writing
• Understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish on a variety of familiar and new topics
• Express ideas, opinions, and information using more complex sentences and vocabulary
• Read, view, and analyze age-appropriate Spanish texts, videos, and other media
• Compare their own culture with those of Spanish-speaking communities
• Develop greater cultural awareness, respect, and global understanding
• Use Spanish as a practical tool for communication in academic, personal, and real-life situations

Spanish 3 encourages students to think critically, communicate thoughtfully, and appreciate the value of language and culture. Spanish 4 is an advanced language course designed to help students communicate confidently and thoughtfully in Spanish. Students use the language in meaningful, real-world situations while deepening their understanding of cultures across the Spanish-speaking world.

By the end of Spanish 4, students will be able to:

• Participate in extended conversations, express opinions, and support their ideas in real-life situations
• Write clear and detailed emails and messages using appropriate formal and informal language
• Understand and analyze authentic Spanish materials such as articles, videos, podcasts, and short literary texts
• Identify main ideas, important details, and cultural perspectives in spoken and written Spanish
• Deliver organized oral presentations on more complex topics
• Write well-developed paragraphs and essays that explain ideas and support a clear point of view
• Use advanced vocabulary and grammar accurately to communicate with greater precision
• Explore major global and cultural themes, including family and community, identity, technology, and global challenges

AP Spanish is a college-level language course designed for students who are ready to communicate confidently and thoughtfully in Spanish. The course emphasizes real-world language use, cultural understanding, and advanced communication skills.

By the end of the AP Spanish course, students will be able to:

• Communicate effectively in Spanish through conversations, written exchanges, presentations, and essays
• Understand and interpret authentic Spanish materials such as articles, videos, podcasts, literature, and other media
• Express ideas clearly, support opinions, and explain viewpoints using advanced vocabulary and grammar
• Use communication strategies to keep conversations going, even when exact words are unfamiliar
• Explore important global themes such as family and community, identity, art and beauty, technology, daily life, and worldwide challenges
• Compare cultural traditions, perspectives, and practices in Spanish-speaking communities with their own experiences
• Make connections between Spanish and other subjects such as history, social studies, science, art, and technology

AP Spanish prepares students for success in college-level language courses and provides the opportunity to earn college credit or placement through the AP Exam. Students gain the skills needed to communicate confidently, think critically, and engage with the Spanish-speaking world in meaningful ways.
