How was the minimum distance for each school determined?
The minimum distance for the primary and elementary school was measured at the discretion of the Cartersville School System based on an aerial circular radius from the primary and elementary school campus that extends to the distance of one-half mile from the campus. The distance for the middle and high school was measured from each respective campus and extends to the distance of one mile from the campus. The measurements are well within the one and one-half mile guideline set forth by the Georgia Department of Education as it relates to student transportation funding for local school systems.
Are there exceptions to the new transportation procedure?
Any exception to the one-half mile eligibility for primary and elementary students and the one mile eligibility for middle and high school students will be those who have a direct route to school affected by one of three hazards including a river, a bridge with no sidewalks and major highways. The one-half mile eligibility for primary and elementary students and the one mile eligibility for middle and high school students will not apply to eligible Special Needs students who require bus transportation.
